Concrete work in the Shuswap, BC
A plain guide to hiring a concrete contractor in the Shuswap. What to ask about, what to get in writing, and how to read a quote.
Before you hire
Four questions worth asking
Driveways, slabs, footings, walkways, and patios all get poured once. Fixing concrete costs more than pouring it, so the hour you spend on the quote is the cheapest hour of the job.
Get the scope in writing
A concrete quote should say how thick the slab is, what reinforcement goes in it, and how much of the site prep is included. Two quotes that look far apart are often quoting different work. Ask each one to put the same list of items on the page and the gap usually explains itself.
Ask what goes under the slab
What sits below the concrete decides how long the concrete lasts. Ask what base material goes down, how deep it is, how it gets compacted, and where water will run once the pour is finished. Drainage is cheap to plan and expensive to add later.
Find out who finishes the pour
The surface you end up looking at is decided in the hours after the truck leaves. Finishing is timed work, and it is a different skill from forming and placing. Ask who will be on site for it, and agree on the finish first: broom, trowel, or exposed aggregate.
Expect cracks, and ask how they are controlled
Concrete shrinks as it cures, so it moves. Control joints and reinforcement decide where that movement shows up. A contractor who tells you concrete never cracks is telling you something they cannot deliver. Ask where the joints go and why.
